The Phoenix Suns have landed the number one pick in the 2018 NBA draft after winning the draft lottery on Wednesday morning.

The draft is set to take place on the June 21, 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Rounding out the top three picks is the Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks, who will select second and third respectively.

This will be the first time in their history that the Suns have had the first overall pick in the draft, after finishing with a league-worst record of 21-62 this season.

The Suns have three main prospects they will be looking to draft, while the Kings and Hawks are expected to end up with the other two.

The first is Wildcats big man DeAndre Ayton, who played in the Suns' very city. He averaged 20.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in his lone season with the Wildcats, earning Pac-12 Player of the Year honours.

The 7 footer racked up 24 double-doubles this season, the second most by a freshman in Division I history.

The second is Real Madrid's 19-year old Luka Doncic, who has been described as one of the best European draft prospects ever. The Slovenian swingman averaged 16.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in the EuroLeague last season in 25.7 minutes, while winning back-to-back Rising Star honours.

New Suns coach Igor Kokoskov coached Doncic to Slovenia's gold medal triumph in the 2017 European Championship, so you know who he will be gunning for.

The other potential pick one prospect is Duke freshman Marvin Bagley III, who became the first ever Blue Devil to lead the ACC in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21.0 points and 11.1 rebounds a game.

The power forward led Duke to the Elite Eight, and became one of just five players in a major conference over the last 25 years to average 20+ points, 10+ rebounds and shoot 60 percent or higher from the field in a season. He won the 2017-18 ACC Player of the Year Award.

It will the tenth year in a row that the Kings have a selection in the top 10, while the Hawks have their highest draft selection since 2007, when the team picked up Al Horford with pick three.

This was the final year of the current draft lottery system. The Suns had a 25 percent chance of winning the lottery after finishing with the worst record. It was the fourth consecutive year where the team with the worst record gained the first pick.

The next two worst records in the league were owned by the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks, who had a 19.9 percent and 13.8 percent chance respectively of landing pick one. They Grizzlies ended up with pick four, while the Mavericks gained pick five.

Next season, the team's with the three worst records will all have an equal 14 percent chance of gaining the first pick.
