Spieth in three-way tie for lead following day one of British Open

American star Jordan Spieth has a three-way share of the lead after the first round of the British Open.

Spieth, along with Brooks Koepka and Matt Kucher, is tied at five-under par, after shooting a round of 65 on day one.

Australian Jason Day, who had social media buzzing with some rather strange high top Nike golf shoes, is four shots back at one-under, as are fellow Aussies Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Aaron Baddeley and Andrew Dodt.

Day had an up and down round, but rallied with late birdies to stay in contention.

“It was kind of back and forth,” Day said.

“It’s really hard because for the most part I hit most irons going up to 15 and then you pull driver out and it feels foreign.

“I hit three poor drives, going up 15, 16, 17. Got myself out of position on all those holes, and didn’t play well.

“Those are the holes where you can kind of get some back and unfortunately didn’t get them back.

“But I made a good putt on 18, which was a nice way to finish.”

Day’s footwear was one of the major talking points of the day, with his shoes even likened to Marty McFLy’s futuristic Nike shoes in Back to the Future Part Two.
